The Alien Index Take
Wemby got his numbers but this was ugly basketball, and frankly, it exposed some concerning habits that should have collectors hitting the pause button. Sure, 25 and 13 with four blocks looks decent in the box score, but watch the tape and you’ll see a player forcing shots when better options existed, settling for contested threes when he could have worked inside, and disappearing for long stretches while his team got boat-raced by 25 points. The 1-for-7 from deep is particularly damning—not because he missed, but because half those attempts were ill-advised heat checks that killed possessions.
What stood out was how passive Wemby looked defensively in the fourth quarter, almost like he’d mentally checked out when the game slipped away. The Knicks repeatedly attacked him in pick-and-rolls and he looked more interested in preserving energy than actually competing. That’s fine for load management purposes, but it’s not the killer instinct you want to see from a generational talent in his sophomore season. The four blocks were nice, but they came mostly in garbage time against bench units throwing up prayers.
Games like this remind you that Wemby’s still figuring out how to impose his will consistently, and until that switch flips, his premium rookies stay volatile.
